A Life Remembered

Obituary

Larry Wardell Walker, 87, passed away on October 15, 2026.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at LaBrie Claybar Funeral Home in Beaumont with Reverend Mark Adams officiating. Visitation will begin prior to the service at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow services at Haven of Rest Cemetery in Beaumont.

Larry Wardell Walker was born in Jackson Mississippi on Feb. 8, 1939. When he was young his parents moved to Beaumont and became members of the First Baptist Church where he continued serving for 80+ years. In March of 1958 Larry married his high school sweetheart Beverly and the two shared 65 wonderful years together. Larry’s employment spanned from DuPont to Automatic Pump, where he spent the bulk of his adult career. After retiring, he felt the call to ministry and became the part-time pastoral care pastor at First Baptist. During this time he worked on his LPC license and became a counselor opening up the Southeast Texas Christian Counseling Center at the church. He loved Beaumont and enjoyed giving back to the community. He served on the board of directors for the Baptist Hospital for 40 years as well as the Community Hospital corporation. When it was chilly outside you would always find him sporting his CHC jacket. He loved the people on both boards and truly felt it was an honor to serve. His passion was people…he loved people. There was never a time of the day that a phone call would not bring him to the bedside of a church member needing love, support or prayers.

He was a devoted husband, supportive father and proud Papa to six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. If you were friends with his grandchildren, chances are you called him Papa too. He welcomed all into his heart and his family. He was gentle spirited and had the patience of Job! No doubt he loved his Lord with all his heart. One of his favorite quotes was “think up!” He believed all we do here on earth should be done with the eternal in mind.

He is survived by his son Ron and wife Kim, his daughter Kim and son in law Michael, six grandchildren:Ashley Walker Brinkley and husband Ross, Cody Walker and wife Christina, Clay Dennis and wife Emma, Blake Dennis and wife Caroline, Kirsten Walker Jayroe and husband Will, and Corey Dennis and wife Jisoo; great grandchildren Weston, Benjamin, Walker, Luke, Annie, Evie and Noah; a brother Stephens Walker and wife Betsy and one sister Candace Walker Hallam and husband Larry, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Larry spent the last three years in the Stonewood Senior living home where he ministered to various caretakers while at the same time they began ministering to him. The family is so grateful for John Toney and his vision to assist the elderly in a home setting and for Dustin Fraser, his amazing, thoughtful and caring hospice nurse, and for the loving kindness and special attention he was given there by all the caretakers. Stonewood was Dad’s home away from home. Although he is gone from his earthly body we are so thankful for the HOPE we have in Jesus that we will see our beloved dad again.

Messages of Love

From family and friends

Larry was a wonderful godly man. He was so helpful to me. He installed a new ceiling fan in my kitchen. That was the kind of man he was! He was a family man who loved his kids and grandkids. He loved his church and his Lord.

Ronnie and Kim, Cyndi and I will unfortunately not be able to make Larry's funeral - but wow, what a legacy that your Dad leaves behind. As he was to so many others throughout the years, Larry was one of my first true mentors and role models as a young man. I know Larry has shared the story about his "running" days a few times. Back in the 90's, he and I would run down the Dowlen Road median in the early mornings. For some reason one year, he and I decided to sign up for the Baptist 5K/Fun Run. Toward the end of the run, as we were "jogging" together - cause I'm not sure we ever built up enough speed to call it running, the course ended by coming up 11th St under the railroad tracks just west of the old hospital at College. We were the last two stragglers. The last two with an Ambulance escorting us, lights-a-glaring. It was like a small Presidential motorcade for Larry! As we were straining to make it up the last hill, the Ambulance loud speaker shrieks out, "Mr. Walker! Mr. Walker! Are you Okay? Are you going to make it, Mr. Walker?" Larry gave a grunt and little wave. I'm not sure who gave the message. For all I know it could have been David Parmer or David Cross on the speaker that day. I guess we may never know! Another memory just popped into my mind. Larry would never let it go that I could call his momma Inez, by her nickname, but he could never get away with doing that. Inez "Inie" Walker raise her kids well, and Larry did the same. Larry Wardell was a great example of a Christian man raising a family, running a company, serving in his local church, mentoring young adults, counseling others, and eventually even being ordained. Larry led an intentional earthly life, a well-lived life, but his true legacy was his faith in Christ, with whom he is now face-to-face. He will be missed, but not forgotten. - Keith & Cyndi Evans

So sorry for your pain as you experience the loss stage of life, Kim, and all your dear family. Prayers for peace, comfort, and eventually joy for your “papa’s” home going.

Larry was a great brother, husband, and father, and a devout Christian throughout his life. The Lord and a loving family were looking over him as his health declined. Growing up, Larry was my next oldest brother, nine years my senior. I was the nuisance little brother, fawned over by his girlfriends and begging for rides on his motorcycle. I reflect on those times and miss him very much.
